2 — 6 AUGUST
Dance Double Bill: Being Here Now & Uh Oh
BEING HERE NOW
Created and performed by Ryuichi Fujimura
“Being Here Now” is made of the first two chapters of HERE NOW Trilogy, a collection of three short dance performances created and performed by Ryuichi Fujimura.
“How did I get here?”(chapter #1) investigates how our perception of time changes as we age, and how we recognize and accept our own mortality as we enter the autumn phase of life. “How I Practice My Religion”(chapter #2) traces back Ryuichi’s personal dance history and unravels what is archived in his dancing body. It asks a fundamental question, “What makes dance?”.
UH OH
Created by Mitchell Christie in collaboration S.X.A.E (Sydney Experimental Arts Ensemble)
uh oh is created and directed by Mitchell Christie in collaboration with artists of Sydney Experimental Arts Ensemble (S.X.A.E). Featuring an original soundtrack composed by S.X.A.E’s in-house dj Mason Peronchik, this multidisciplinary dance-theatre work reveals the awkwardness of very normal human interactions and celebrates everyday absurdity. Deeply theatrical, wildly athletic and a little bit cheeky.
Not your regular dance show, uh oh celebrates the brilliance of human screw-ups and predicaments. Looking at how we navigate conflict with strangers, friends, and within ourselves. uh oh illuminates the habits we try to hide, revealing them in a devilishly perverse way. At what point is something so surreal it seems real again? uh oh asks this question with the physical body in a non-linear series of fantastical happenings.

From Cat, Con & Alex: The Old Fitz Theatre Artistic Directors
“And now for something completely different - a dance double bill! Contemporary dance at the Old Fitz, you might ask? We put out the call for submissions that pushed the boundaries of our humble little space and are delighted to welcome not one but two dance theatre works in a Fitz first in 2022. Ryuichi Fujimura has been a staple of the Sydney contemporary dance scene and we are thrilled that he is finally making his debut on the Old Fitz stage with his humorous reflection on the life of a contemporary dancer. Following this, we are equally as excited to pair this with emerging dance makers Mitchell Christie and Sydney Experimental Arts Ensemble. It will be a night at the Fitz like none you’ve encountered before.”
